In the wake of Wednesday, Modern Family said goodbye to a loved member of the Dunphy family.
In the January 15 episode titled “Legacy,” Phil visited his father Frank (recurring guest star Fred Willard) to make sure he was okay after hearing some news about him. Frank had been wandering through a grocery store for hours, making Phil suspect that his father had dementia. Even though Phil’s guess was wrong, Frank would eventually disappear from the screen.
“When I was growing up, he was the cool father,” said Phil. “He was hip. He knew all of Grease’s dances (and) knew all the expressions – BFF: Best Friends Forever, TMI: Too much information, BJ: Blue Jeans… ”(Hmm… does this sound familiar to me?)
“We didn’t do much that (last) day, but it could have been one of the best days I’ve ever had with my father,” continued Phil. “I just didn’t know it was going to be the last one.”
The episode then came to Phil when he praised Frank at a small gathering surrounded by loved ones. “Don’t miss the opportunity to let people you know know about it,” he said.
All in all, Willard’s Frank Dunphy appeared in 14 episodes in Modern Family’s 11 seasons. He and his TV son Ty Burrell previously appeared in the short-lived Fox comedy “Back to You” with Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton.
Modern Family has only seven episodes left before the Dunphy / Pritchett clan finally says goodbye. The series finale of the Emmy award-winning comedy will air on Wednesday April 8th.
