Ricky Gervais jokes about Felicity Huffman's prison sentence during the opening monologue of Golden Globes

BEVERLY HILLS, California. – Ricky Gervais was no stranger to the controversy. He started the Golden Globe Awards by joking Felicity Huffman about her 2019 sentence.

“You all look pretty, all crazy. You came here in your limousine,” said Gervais Sunday evening during his opening monologue. “I came here in a limousine tonight and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman.”

The joke received a lukewarm response from the crowd, and the television show featured Tom Hanks writhing in the audience.

Gervais went on to say that he felt bad for Huffman’s daughter and that it must have been more embarrassing to joke the experience than her father William H. Macy’s role in “Wild Hogs”.

Huffman was sentenced to two weeks in prison last fall for receiving a $ 15,000 payment for a test leader to correct her daughter’s SAT responses. Huffman was one of nearly two dozen parents found guilty of the operation varsity blues scandal. Another 15 parents deny the charges.

“I broke the law. I admitted that and pleaded guilty to this crime. There are no excuses or justifications for my actions. Period,” said Huffman in a statement after her conviction.

She added: “I can promise you that over the coming months and years I will try to live a more honest life, give my daughters and family a better role model, and continue to use my time and energy wherever I am needed . “

Huffman’s sentence included 250 hours of community service and one year of release under supervision. Macy’s was not indicted.
