Nirbhaya case: convicts may not be hanged on January 22 - News

The Supreme Court had previously rejected the healing remedies of two of the convicts.

The government of Delhi told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that the execution of prisoners sentenced to death in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case will not take place on January 22 because a mercy plea has been filed by one of them. The four convicts – Vinay Sharma (26), Mukesh Kumar (32), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) – are to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar prison. A Delhi court had issued their death sentences on January 7.

Judges Manmohan and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal were told by the government of Delhi and the Center that the petition of convicted Mukesh, who disputes his death sentence, was premature.

The government of Delhi and the prison authorities have informed the court that according to the rules it will have to wait until the means of grace is decided before executing the death sentence.

They also said that none of the four convicts can be executed on January 22 unless the current means of grace is decided.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday had rejected the curative means of Mukesh and Vinay.
