Amazon’s making a Lord of the Rings MMO set pre-trilogy

That’s in the works has been developed in cooperation with its inner Amazon Game Studios — meaning we’ll shortly get both a new Rings game and which TV show it has already shown.

There’s no word yet on a narrative or placing. Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers — by the exact same studio developing New World — tremendous opportunity to play and create.”

We knew the game was in development — particulars surfaced Last year, though it’s been relatively quiet on this front since and the game’s probably still in the early stages of development. But now we know Amazon’s projecting its resources into the match, we can expect it’ll see a huge boost in size and quality it may not otherwise have had.

This wouldn’t be the first MMO place in Tolkien’s world, or even the only one — Lord of the Rings Online is, So far as I know, still around. Nonetheless, the in-game lore spans a few tens of thousands of years, therefore if Amazon would like to distinguish its own match from the previous offering, it may always set it through a different time period. When the game was first demonstrated last September, a spokesperson for Middle-Earth Enterprises (that owns the name rights to Tolkien’s works) said it would be about”exploring epic regions in Middle-earth through the years leading to the occasions of The Lord of the Rings.”

According to a spokesperson, the match has been developed in cooperation with Leyou, the Chinese company that owns Warframe developer Digital Extremes and which, oddly, used to be a poultry company . Leyou’s publishing branch, Athlon Games, is run by Dave Miller, who worked with Warner Bros on a different Tolkien-branded game, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor.

It’s not a Massive surprise Amazon is looking to squeeze as much as it Can from the Tolkien license. There aren’t very many fantasy franchises with that degree of name-recognition, and also the recent success of Shadow of Mordor has shown there’s definitely a market for LotR-branded games. Around a decade-and-a-half past, a whole slew of Tolkien games awakened following the release of these films — many quite excellent, although some have since vanished.

Supposedly the match and the Lord of the Rings TV show Amazon‘s also working will have no connection to each other, regardless of Being developed at roughly the same time. Grow an MMO, I would not be surprised if the show sees the light of Day first.
